Treatment of Cholesterol in 2017

JAMA. Published online July 24, 2017. doi:10.1001/jama.2017.6753
Clinicians and patients may find recent studies relevant to decisions about lipid-lowering therapy to be perplexing. There are now, for the first time, 3 evidence-based options to modify atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease risk via lipid-lowering medications. With new information emerging, recent guidelines aging, and decisions needing to be made, this is an opportune time to review lipid-lowering therapy in the age of increasing evidence-based choice. The focus in this Viewpoint is on typical patients, not those with extreme phenotypes.

Canaanites/Fenices

Living Descendants of Biblical Canaanites Identified
Via DNA
Genome sequenced from 3,700-year-old remains is found in today's residents
of Lebanon.

Several of the Canaanite individuals sampled in the study had been buried in large clay jars.
More than 90 percent of the genetic ancestry of modern Lebanese is derived from ancient Canaanites, according to a paper published today in the American Journal of Human Genetics.
Researchers supported by The Wellcome Trust were able to sequence the Canaanite genome from the remains of five individuals buried in the ancient port city of Sidon (modern Saïda, Lebanon) around 3,700 years ago. The results were compared against the DNA of 99 modern-day Lebanese residents./.../

From stomach ache to depression

Our gut hurts and we feel miserable. Such disparate phenomena are mechanistically connected, but how? Cervenka et al. review the many pathways taken by dietary tryptophan as it is metabolized into kynurenines. These metabolites distribute into homeostatic networks that integrate diverse aspects of mammalian physiology. Depending on physiological context, kynurenines influence health and disease states ranging from intestinal conditions to inflammation to cancer progression. Further, they can mediate the effects of exercise, mood, and neuronal excitability and, ultimately, communicate with the microbiota.

Texto sugerido pela AMICOR Maria Inês Reinert Azambuja
SIR WILLIAM OSLER & HIS INSPIRATIONAL WORDS “Wilder Penfield, the eminent Canadian neurosurgeon, said of him: ‘He belongs to medical students of all time, as Lincoln belongs to the common man everywhere, a man who grew to be what he wanted by dint of hard work, and in whose footsteps any undergraduate may dare to hope and dream that he may follow.’ … The life and philosophy of William Osler continues to serve as a standard of excellence and a model for the evolution of the profession and its practitioners.” From The Quotable Osler Sir William Osler, M.D., C.M., 1st Baronet (July 12, 1849 – December 29, 1919) was a Canadian physician. (The "o" in "Osler" is pronounced like the "o" in "go".) He was one of the "Big Four" founding professors at Johns Hopkins Hospital as the first Professor of Medicine and founder of the Medical Service there. (The "Big Four" were William Osler, Professor of Medicine; William Stewart Halsted, Professor of Surgery; Howard A. Kelly, Professor of Gynecology; and William H. Welch, Professor of Pathology.) Osler created the first residency program for specialty training of physicians, and he was the first to bring medical students out of the lecture hall for bedside clinical training. He has been called the "Father of modern medicine." Osler was a pathologist, physician, educator, bibliophile, historian, author, and renowned practical joker.

Stem cells may be the key to staying strong in old age

Stem cells may be the key to staying strong in old age
Credit: University of Rochester
University of Rochester Medical Center researchers have discovered that loss of muscle stem cells is the main driving force behind muscle decline in old age in mice. Their finding challenges the current prevailing theory that age-related muscle decline is primarily caused by loss of motor neurons. Study authors hope to develop a drug or therapy that can slow muscle stem cell loss and muscle decline in the future.
